Should you take supplements?

If you think you are a health conscious individual, the chances are you are taking or have taken supplements. Every now and then a great claim is made on behalf of some vitamin or mineral.

At Shapes Weightloss Club, we believe strongly that unless indicated by some analysis or test, it is quite a bad idea to take supplements. Why?

Each one of us is unique in our bio-chemical makeup. While all of us have the same minerals and vitamins in our body, the exact quantity in which we need and utilize them is unique to each of u.

If each one of is genetically unique, then it is only logical that everything else about is unique. We may eat from the same food groups, but how much we eat, how frequently we eat and in what combinations of foods we eat is unique to each individual. This uniqueness and individuality is expressed in our bio-chemical makeup. In other words, in what ratios the vitamins and minerals are needed for each of us to be healthy is uniquely individual. Some people seem to be capable of eating a lot of meat while others can’t seem to digest meat. If you analyze them you will see that their stomach acid levels and Ph are different. Their need for key minerals like iron, calcium and magnesium would different.

A vitamin or mineral works with or sometimes against another vitamin or mineral as it competes for absorption by the cell. For example, zinc will work in synergy with magnesium while it works as an antagonist against iron and copper. That is the nature of chemistry whether it occurs in the body or outside.

So when you take a mineral without a proper checkup, then you risk imbalancing your bio-chemical makeup.

Let us take calcium for example. Calcium is one of the most routinely supplemented minerals. You read an article or hear someone say that every woman should take calcium to reduce the risk of osteoporosis. While calcium has a vital role in bone health, it may cause several problems if its supplementation is not indicated by your individual bio-chemistry. If you are someone who suffers from low-stomach acid levels, additional calcium will make it worse by lowering iron among others. Calcium promotes alkalinity. Indications that calcium absorption is becoming a problem include calcification including sours, stones and osteoarthritis. If you are someone who has always, by instinct, avoided eating calcium rich foods, then you want to be careful if supplementing without consultation.

At Shapes Weightloss Club, we can study your individual needs and identify which supplements may be of benefit to you.

Our advice: Don’t take supplements unless indicated or otherwise recommended by someone with knowledge. Vitamins and minerals are categorized as food supplements and you may think that you don’t need expert advice.
